Celtics NBA Finals Injury Update: Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III has been plagued by a sore left knee throughout the season. He had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in April and he is also facing a bone bruise. However, Celtics coach Ime Udoka is upbeat about Williams’ condition as he heads into the Celtics NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors, though he notes that the center’s status is considered a day two.
“Rob is fine,” Udoka said Tuesday. “He feels good. His minutes are few. He’s only played 14 in [Game 7 against the Miami Heat] so we try to keep him in the bottom if we can. Obviously, that. It’s in his favor going forward, but the days off so overall he’s going to feel better. He’s daily throughout the knockout stages.”
Udoka thinks the isolated nature of the games in the Finals, coupled with the extended break before the series begins, will be beneficial when it comes to Williams’ abilities.
“He will feel better with a break between games, especially with two days off between games instead of playing every other day,” added Udoka. “Going back to the Milwaukee series, we played 17 days in a row every other day, so that’s going to get you affected by the surgery. We kept him rested and helped him get back to feeling good. feel better. That will benefit us in the future.”
Williams isn’t the only member of the Celtics to have a bit of a setback. Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart also missed two games in the conference final against the Heat. He missed Round 1 due to a sprained foot and missed Round 4 due to an ankle sprain. The good news for the Celtics is that none of those issues could cause Smart to miss time against Golden State.
“Marcus, don’t worry about that,” Udoka said. “What is the bump and it will go away as time goes on. And the pain tolerance, he can obviously play a lot, and he did that and played the hard minutes.”
The Celtics will need any help to take down the Warriors and win their first NBA championship since 2008, so the updates provided by Udoka regarding Williams and Smart are clearly encouraging.
