Although Giannis Antetokounmpo excelled in the playoffs that ended with a 50-piece finish in the final, it seems the two-time MVP doesn’t get enough credit as one of the NBA’s superstars. He’s had a great regular season, averaging 30 points, 11 rebounds and six assists while playing more minutes in center than ever due to Brook Lopez’s back injury. He’s made real strides as a player and developed a reliable mid-range game.

No longer a bus driver, Kevin Durant led a series of Brooklyn Nets that went through one of the weirdest periods a franchise can have. Durant recovered from his torn Achilles without missing a beat. If he played more games in the regular season (which can’t be counted on for his age), he would have a real case for MVP. But many attempts to create their own super team in New York have failed. Last year was unlucky. Kyrie Irving and James Harden suffered injuries in a series where they still mostly won against the Milwaukee Bucks.

LA Lakers: $41.18 million / $85.65 million through 2022-23
LeBron James has been the king of the NBA for over a decade. But his reign as the most important player in the league is officially down. The stats for James’ season look great. However, anyone who has watched the Lakers knows how awful it feels to watch this team for any length of time. There’s a lot of blame for how they ended up in this position two years after winning a title, but James was complicit in the downfall.
4. James Harden
Philadelphia 76ers: $43,848 million / player option $46.87
How long will Harden be on a list like this? He could opt out of a long-term contract this summer. But every playoff game where he scores 16 points and struggles to remove anyone from dribbling makes the idea of paying him $50 million a year seem like a terrible idea.
3. Russell Westbrook
LA Lakers: $44.21 million / player option $47.06
A lot of people could see Russell Westbrook as a bad game against the Lakers when the trade hit. But no one saw it turn out this bad. He can’t take shots, he can’t defend anyone, and his public comments suggest that he believes his failures are the result of others hitting him. he is disappointed. It’s best for Westbrook and the Lakers that he’s not on the team next season. But with his huge contract, they seem stuck together.
2. John Wall
Houston Rockets: $44.31 million / player option $47.36 million
Is playing lousy and aggressive making your team worse nightly or just never playing at all? John Wall has had the worst signing in the league since he signed. But it’s mostly bad luck that he’s in this position again.
His body begins to fail him as soon as the ink dries on his current contract. Wall has played 40 games in the past three years. Dirk Nowitzki, who retired in 2019, has played more games (128) than a point guard (113) in the past five years. Who knows when or if we’ll see him again on the field soon.
